WHY STUDY BUSINESS COMMUNICATION & TECHNOLOGIES?

In the ever-changing world in which businesses and government agencies operate, it is important that students entering the workplace acquire the knowledge, reasoning processes, skills and attitudes necessary of efficient and effective functioning in a variety of business contexts, both local and global.
Business Communication and Technologies is designed to equip students with the ability to communicate effectively and to interact confidently through and within a business environment and to use a range of business information and technologies appropriate to both the private and public administration sectors. Such skills are of fundamental importance in attaining a knowledge of business, in understanding private and public administration concepts, in analysing and evaluating recommendations in a range of business-related situations and in handling a variety of business transactions. They are also critical to developing the effective workteam, personal and interpersonal communication skills essential for good staff and customer relations and, ultimately, the successful operation of a business.
This subject combines general and vocational education components. Students are provided with the opportunity to gain vocational competencies at AQF Level 2 which contribute towards Certificate II in Business (Office Administration)

During the course students will develop the knowledge, processes and skills associated with this course through a contextual approach . This approach exposes students to a variety of learning experiences commensurate with the needs of different private sector business offices and public administrative situations. These contexts are:
Semester 1 – Retail &/or choice
Semester 2 - Travel &/or choice
Semester 3 – Public Administration &/or choice
Semester 4 – Tourism and Hospitality &/or choice
Choices are: Legal, Banks & Financial Institutions, Real Estate, Mining, Political, Events Management, Technical, Health & Wellbeing, Rural, Media, Entertainment.

The study of Business Communication & Technologies is of benefit to students because it will equip them with:

The ability to communicate effectively and to interact confidently through and within a business environment, within either the private or public sector.
The ability to use a range of business information technologies in the private and public administration sectors
The ability to apply a range of individual and group strategies to resolve issues and complete tasks within private and public sector administrative environments
The ability and willingness to question existing private and public sector administrative practices from a variety of view points, for example, financial, technological, social, ethical and cultural.
The ability and willingness to be enterprising in developing solutions to problems within a business environment.

CRITERIA
|
Knowledge and Understanding
Recall knowledge through defining, describing, and explaining previously learned factual information. Students are also required to demonstrate understandings by illustrating, explaining, and applying in familiar situations the key concepts, principles, processes and practices related to business environments.
Reasoning Processes
Reflect critically on issues that are significant to business environments. Students are also required to select, interpret, organise, analyse, synthesise and evaluate information, develop and support arguments, draw conclusions and make recommendations.
Skills and Procedures
Completion of a variety of tasks using appropriate technologies and presentation skills, and to record business procedures either manually or electronically.

ASSESSMENT PROGRAM AND EXPECTATIONS
|
There will be a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 4 assessment instruments per semester covering a range of instruments including objective short responses to extended responses, response to stimulus, procedural applications, research, practical tasks, non-written presentation and integrated projects etc.
Time frame for tests will be from 40 – 120 minutes, assignments 2 – 3 weeks. Extended responses will be a minimum of 200 words.
Each criteria will be assessed a minimum of once and a maximum of twice per semester.

AWARDING EXIT LEVELS OF ACHIEVEMENTS

VHA Standard A in any 2 criteria and nothing less than a B
HA Standard B in any 2 criteria and nothing less than a C
SA Standard C in any 2 criteria and nothing less than a D
LA Standard D in any 2 criteria
VLA Does not meet requirement of an LA

RECOMMENDATIONS
|
There are NO recommendations for studying Business Communications & Technologies other than dedication and a commitment to completing all homework tasks. An SA in English and the study of Office Skills would be an advantage.
