WHY STUDY CERTIFICATE I / II?

 

Business, as an area of study, helps to develop students' understanding of business and the environments in which business organisations operate. It also provides students with a range of personal and interpersonal skills with general application to personal and work life, as well as specific knowledge and skills related to employment within the business services and wholesale industries. As many students aspire to careers in a variety of small business, retail and clerical/administrative situations. The program of study enable students to respond to the ever-changing nature of business technologies, to perform a variety of tasks, to communicate effectively, to operate efficiently in a business, and to relate appropriately to other people.

This program provides opportunities for students to use their creativity and derive satisfaction from working with materials and technology as they prepare for future employment or recreation and leisure activities. Students develop appropriate skills such as keyboarding, basic bookkeeping, clerical skills and information processing, as well as a range of general skills, including communication and literacy, numeracy, problem solving, enterprise, team skills, organisational skills, self-management, and customer service skills.

From this study students are given an understanding of business which provides them with opportunities for the development of appropriate skills to help them in the transition from school to the workforce, and to their role as responsible members of the community. Students who do not wish to enter employment within the business services have the opportunity to develop skills in and attitudes towards business and to be ale to put them to use in the broader life role.

CERTIFICATE I gives students an understanding of the fundamental business skills and provides them with opportunities for development of appropriate skills to assist them in the transition from school to their role at work within a business environment and as a responsible, participative member in the community. It offers a variety and depth of study that could be orientated towards life skills, vocational skills or community needs.

CERTIFICATE II gives students knowledge and understanding of the requirements of the business world and provides them with a range of skills necessary for efficient operation within an office environment.

 

WHAT IS STUDIED?

 

For both Certificate I and II the following Study Area Core are studied.

The study area core is designed to allow students to achieve a broad understanding of business services and to begin to develop certain integral skills and attitudes that underpin employment in these industries. The study area core consists of four units:

•  Human Resource Management

•  Promotion, Sales and Marketing

•  Career Pathways

CRITERIA

 

•  Knowledge and understanding

Recalling of previously learned factual information and to demonstrate understanding of that information. They should be able to:

(a) recall information related to the business industries

(b) demonstrate understanding of facts, concepts key ideas and principles of business practices

•  Practical skills and procedures

Demonstrate the ability to complete tasks using technologies and to perform business procedures. They should be able to:

•  apply skills and knowledge in a range of business activities

•  prepare and produce business documents and information using appropriate technologies

•  Workplace skills

Communication skills relevant to business activities and to students' management of their own work. They should be able to:

•  communicate ideas and information using a range of spoken, written, graphic and other non-verbal means of expression

•  demonstrate self-management skills by completing tasks in agreed timeframes, organising work schedules, setting goals, working individually and with others and reaching decisions.

 

ASSESSMENT PROGRAM AND EXPECTATIONS

 

Assessment is designed to enable students to demonstrate achievement of the above criteria. To determine a student's level of achievement, a wide range of tasks is used. Assessment techniques may include: objective and short-response tests, role-plays, oral presentations, folio and written work, reports, group tasks, workplace and teacher observations, research and project work, recording of business procedures and financial transactions, and practical work.

Assessment is also based on students demonstrating their abilities to do a task or competency.

 

AWARDING EXIT LEVELS OF ACHIEVEMENTS

 

VHA Standard A in any 2 criteria and nothing less than a B

HA Standard B in any 2 criteria and nothing less than a C

SA Standard C in any 2 criteria and nothing less than a D

LA Standard D in any 2 criteria

VLA Does not meet requirement of an LA

 

RECOMMENDATIONS

 

There are NO recommendations.

 

CAREERS

 

Many students aspire to careers in a variety of small business and clerical-administrative situations. Employers expect persons leaving school to enter the workforce in the business services with the ability to respond to the ever changing nature of business technologies and to perform a variety of tasks. These tasks need to be performed with accuracy, a concern for quality and a commitment to achieving the employer's business goals and objectives. In addition to technical skills such as keyboard skills, basic bookkeeping, clerical skills and information processing, employers also expect entry-level trainees to possess a range of general skills including:

•  Communication and literacy

•  Numeracy

•  Problem-solving

•  Enterprise

•  Team skills

•  Organisational skills

•  Self-management

•  Customer service skills

In both programs it is highly recommended that students participate in Structured workplace learning. For Certificate I there is an expectation for a one week block each year and with the Certificate II an minimum of a one week block.

Upon successfully completing the two year course the student will receive:

•  Level of Achievement for the subject on their Senior Certificate

•  A Certificate I or II in Business

If they do not successfully complete all competencies to receive their full certificate they will receive a Statement of Attainment listing successfully completed modules.
