WHY STUDY EARLY CHILDHOOD PRACTICES?

 

The primary focus of studying in the early childhood field is to promote an awareness of the importance of quality childcare practices in the community.

The emphasis in this study area specification (SAS) is on the practical application of knowledge; students gain parenting skills, communicating skills, planning and preparing activities and working in teams. Students learn how to perform roles that facilitate, support and enhance child development.

Early Childhood Practices is a valuable subject for students wishing to pursue a career in childcare; as well as being invaluable to all students in future life roles .

 

WHAT IS STUDIED?

 

The course is organised in units as follows:

  • Physical care of children
  • Physical development of children
  • Accident Prevention and Safety
  • Social and Emotional Development
  • The value of Play
  • Creativity and Self-expression
  • Intellectual and language development
  • Career pathways in childcare

During the course, the students will:

  • examine different aspects of the pysical care of children
  • experience interaction with children through a variety of activities from morning teas to Barefoot in the Park
  • carry out a First Aid Course
  • participate in researching children's entertainment and literature

 

CRITERIA

•  Knowledge and Understanding

Recalling information and applying knowledge to real early childhood situations.

•  Reasoning

Analysing and evaluation information to draw conclusions.

•  Practical Skills

Interacting with others; demonstrating practical skills.

 

ASSESSMENT PROGRAM AND EXPECTATIONS

 

There will be a maximum of 4 assessments per semester, ranging from short response, response to stimulus, case studies, journals and practical activities.

 

AWARDING EXIT LEVELS OF ACHIEVEMENTS

 

VHA - Standard A in 2 criteria and Standard B in other criterion.

HA – Standard B in 2 criteria and standard C in the other criterion

SA – Standard C in 2 criteria with no less than standard D in other criterion.

LA – At least 2 standard D results.

VLA – Does not meet the requirements for a LA .

 

THE STUDY OF EARLY CHILDHOOD PRACTICES COULD LEAD TO A CAREER AS A:

 

•  Childcare Worker

•  Early Childhood Teacher Aide

•  Nanny

•  Nurse / Nurses' Aide

•  Child Health Worker
