WHY STUDY HOME ECONOMICS?

 

Senior Home Economics has a unique place in the school curriculum in that it focuses on the well-being of individuals and families. The course involves students in areas of study such as the effect food and food choices has on health, the impact of living environment on individuals and families; and developing management skills associated with the consumer use of textiles.

Through the medium of health, living environments and textiles students gain skills in collecting, analysing, organising and evaluating the quality and validity of a range of information.

Students also develop skills of planning, organising and producing quality products – skills that they can apply in the workplace, and also on a personal level.

Emphasis is placed on management, reasoning processes, problem solving, decision making, communicating ideas and practical work.

 

WHAT IS STUDIED?

 

The course is organised in three (3) areas of study:

•  Food Studies

•  Living Environment

•  Textiles Studies

During the course students will study:

•  The health of individuals and society

•  ‘Food and an Australian Identity' focusing on the influences of Australian eating patterns

•  ‘Contemporary issues in Food and Nutrition for Adolescents' focusing on diet and its relationship to adolescent health

•  ‘Individuals and Families' in their living environments

‘Launching and Landing' focusing on the transition from living with family to living independently

•  ‘Consumer Textiles' focusing on the relationship between the properties of textiles and their intended use.

•  ‘Design for Fashion' focusing on design elements and principles, textile properties and construction techniques.

• 'Creating with Textiles' focusing on the production of textile articles that satisfy a person's creative talents.

 

 

CRITERIA

 

•  Knowledge and Understanding :

Recalling of knowledge through defining, describing and explaining facts.

Demonstrating understanding by interpreting and applying key concepts.

•  Reasoning Processes

Using critical thinking skills to research issues – selecting, analysing, synthesizing, and evaluating information to develop and support arguments.

•  Practical Performance

Demonstrating practical skills in producing quality products by exploring basic factors, planning, using resources, performing skills and evaluating plans and processes used.

 

ASSESSMENT PROGRAM AND EXPECTATIONS

 

There will be a minimum of one (1) assessment instrument per criteria per semester, and no more than 2. they include written and practical applications, written assessment covers a range of techniques – multiple choice, short answer, extended responses and assignments.

 

AWARDING EXIT LEVELS OF ACHIEVEMENTS

 

VHA Standard A in any 2 criteria and not less than a B in the remaining criterion.

HA Standard B in any 2 criteria and not less than a C in the remaining criterion.

SA Standard C in any 2 criteria and not less than a D in the remaining criterion.

LA Standard D in any 2 criteria

VLA Does not meet requirement of an LA

 

RECOMMENDATIONS

 

Students are strongly advised to have studied and passed a Junior Home Economics subject and to have passed Junior English. Writing skills are very important for success in this subject.
