From The Principal

The Principal, Ms Sally Thompson presented to parents and students at the Year 7 to 8 Transition Information Sessions an insight into "What makes her tick", and hence what will be the key influencing factors in her leadership decisions. She felt it was necessary for parents and students to understand where she was coming from as she was the "new kid on the block".

This is what she shared with the audience:

What Am I About?

I am very passionate about learning and creating a learning environment for every student so that they work at their threshold and reach their potential.

I am extremely passionate about every young person having the social and life skills to be successful at whatever life deals them and have the resilience to bounce back and the capacity to celebrate and have fun.

Better learning outcomes for ALL are our core business and are the responsibility of every staff member.

Relationships are essential for quality learning.

Every person in the school deserves respect.

Productive relationships and communication between the school and home enables every student to reach their potential.

My values live through my behaviour.

We are a learning organisation; we have the right to learn and be safe at all times.

Finally, I am always looking to create learning opportunities which will give students an equal or better edge on life. What learning is needed and what relationships do we need to develop to enable that learning to occur?

Secondly, she shared with the audience what she believed parents wanted from a High School and explained that these principles would also influence what Gladstone State High would aim to provide students, parents and caregivers.

This is what was shared with the audience:

What Do Parents Want From High School?

  • positive relationships all round
  • for students to be safe and happy, wanting to come to school
  • FAIR and FIRM discipline
  • regular communication with the school about the progress of their student
  • opportunities to remain involved with their student's education although that may look different to what it was in Primary school
  • excellent teaching: a productive and engaging learning environment responsive to the needs of their student
  • a broad curriculum which provides learning opportunities and further pathways for their student
  • preparation for employment or further study and training
  • development of life skills to tackle the world

Most of all:

Believe in their child,
Get to know them,
Say hello to them,
And, help them reach their potential.
